Local Honey

At some point, we want to have bees. Did you know that? We want to raise bees, make honey and sell it, either at local farmer’s markets or out of our house. We can’t have them in the neighborhood where we’re currently living. Too many close neighbors, bee allergies, etc. It’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. But someday. So for now, we rely on Hall’s Honey Farm, a couple miles away, for our supply of local honey. I prefer to buy honey locally, not just for my allergies (I realize that the jury is still out on whether or not local honey helps to alleviate pollen allergies, but I think it works, so there,) but also because it’s one of those things that you CAN get that’s truly local. Like tomatoes and corn in the summer.

So in the rain, I drove over to the Hall’s house, knocked on the door and was led through the living room to their current honey stash. I picked out a large bottle of darkish poplar honey, paid my six dollars and immediately came home to make some tea. I know I can hop into any grocery store and pay half that for a teddy bear of California honey. But we don’t live in California and to me, it’s worth the extra money. It just tastes better when you can buy local.
