Of all the things I inherited from my mother, I’m most unhappy about the whole moles issue. We have fair skin, we burn and we’re prone to getting moles. Which blows. I’m very careful about the sun. And I try to always remember to slather on the SPF when I do go out. As viligant as I might be, I’m still plagued with the moles.

I have a new one on my back. I can’t really see it, but my husband says it’s more red than brown. Thus, I made an appointment to get it checked out and (hopefully) removed. I don’t mind getting them removed. It’s not painful and I’ll trade the three weeks of caring for the wound for the mental stress of worrying about skin cancer any day. But I *think* I’ve developed an allergy to the glue in band-aids.

Last time, I had one taken off my neck, the area around the wound was fine, but everything that touched the glue was red and welty. I had a literal band-aid shaped red splotch on my neck. And it itched like hell. Whatever, it’s better than skin cancer, right?

Mom, I’d still rather have your bone structure.

  • You sure its not a latex allergy? Maybe ask them to use a non-latex band-aid?

  • Erin, Tom’s right. I began to get that reaction to bandages a few years ago after years (okay, decades) of no problems. I began to use the non-latex kind and viola! Not sure if they changed the formula or I just grew a sensitivity. Whatever, the reaction is itchy and ugly. Good luck with the mole thing. We viking sorts in my family have that issue, too.

  • You’re both geniuses. I do have a latex allergy. I didn’t realize band-aids are made of latex, but that makes sense. Thank you!

  • So you’re the one Aja got that allergy from! Wait, can allergies be passed cousin-wise?
